SCIRI Conference / Peter Worley

[EN]

We invite you to participate at the lecture of Peter Worley (Co-Chief Executive Officer at The Philosophy Foundation)  on Thursday, June 25, 4.00 p.m. (Bucharest time). The topic of his lecture is Corrupting Youth. Philosophy in Schools

A short abstract of his intervention:

Facilitator: So, was Socrates a wise man?

Lennie (age 10): Yes, because he believed in truth and stood up for the truth.

Millie (age 10): Yes and no. Yes because, as Lennie said, he believed in the truth, but no because he got himself killed.

In Athens two and a half thousand years ago, the philosopher Socrates was put on trial by a jury of his peers and charged with ‘corrupting the youths of Athens and believing in gods other than the city-approved gods’ (Apology 24b-c). He defended himself, was nevertheless found guilty, sentenced to death and subsequently executed. This is often paraphrased to mean that he was put to death for inciting the young people of Athens to question, including questioning authority, and that this was frowned upon by certain powerful people. But, as is often the case, there is more to this story.

Join Peter Worley as he discusses philosophy with young people and the links between Ancient Greek conversations and philosophy in the classroom today.”

The meeting will take place on ZOOM, and will be later posted on SCIRI YouTube Channel. In order to participate, please use the following link:

SCIRI Conference / Blanca Rodriguez Lopez – UPDATE

[EN]

We invite you to participate at the lecture of Blanca Rodriguez Lopez, Associate Professor of moral and political philosophy at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The topic of her lecture is going to be Cognitive enhancement and competition. An experimental study and will take place on Friday, June 19th 2020, at 4.00 p.m. (EET).

A short abstract of her intervention: „The debate about the moral permissibility of human enhancement in general, and especially that of cognitive improvement has tended to unfold as if such moral permissibility could be established independently of the context of use. However, there are experimental studies that show that moral judgment depends on the type of enhancement in question. For example, cognitive enhancement is considered less permissible than motivation enhancement (Faber et al. 2015).

We start our study starting from the hypothesis that the perceived moral permissibility also changes according to the type of activities for which cognitive improvement is used. In a first step, and through the use of vignattes, we confirm this hypothesis and find that the activity in which the use of cognitive enhancers is deemed less permissible is sport.

A review of the specialized literature indicates that perhaps the biggest, most pervasive objection and concern even to advocates of human enhancement is related to considerations of justice. In the second part of the study, we relate our results with this concern for justice. To do this, we have designed an experiment in which different types of activities (art, study, sport and professional) are presented in two versions (competitive and non-competitive).”

The meeting will be organized on Zoom:

SCIRI Conference / Ștefan Maftei – UPDATE

[EN]

We invite you to participate at the lecture of Ștefan Maftei (Department of Philosophy, Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj) on Friday, June 12, 4.00 p.m. (EET). The topic of the lecture is The Identity of Dracula: Who is the Vampire in Bram Stoker’s Dracula?

A short abstract of his intervention:

„Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula is an enthralling narrative built around the story of the protagonist, Count Dracula from Transylvania, the vampire, who seeks a new home in England, so that he can find a new undead existence for himself there. But what is the true identity of Dracula the vampire? How does Stoker depicts the nature of his main character? What are the origins of Dracula, as portrayed by the novel? Is looking for the vampire-count’s identity important to us, readers, in order to better understand the novel? And, in the end, why is searching for the identity of Dracula still so important to us, 21st century readers? My presentation will try to unravel some of the less obvious aspects of the character Dracula, in order to piece together a captivating image of the identity of one of the most – if not the most – famous characters of 19th century Gothic novel.”

The meeting will take place on ZOOM, and will be later posted on SCIRI YouTube Channel. In order to participate, please use the following link:
